KPTA Members Participate in SOAR Hack-a-Thon

Gina Pariser, PT, PhD and Kylie Smith, a student in the DPT Program at Bellarmine University, attended the inaugural SOAR (Shaping our Appalachian Region) Heath Hack-A-Thon October 13-15 at the Center for Rural Development in Somerset, KY. Partnering with MIT Hacking Medicine, the SOAR Health Hack-A-Thon focused on action-oriented innovation to help develop solutions to tough problems in health care. The themes for this Hack-A-Thon were obesity, diabetes, and substance abuse in our Appalachian region.  Over 150 people, including physicians, health care administrators, insurance specialists, engineers, and concerned citizens attended the event.  On Thursday evening the organizers from MIT explained the rules and provided do’s and don’ts for a successful Hack-A-Thon.  On Friday morning participants pitched problems and teams were formed. Teams met late into the evening on Friday and started early on Saturday morning to create an innovative solution and proposed business model.  On Saturday afternoon teams presented their ideas, in 3 minutes, and then judges selected winners for their innovations.  Kylie’s team worked on an app hat could be used as a resource for health care providers, patients, and families on substance abuse; including a section on the role of physical therapy.  Gina’s team worked on a one-stop-shop health care mall for people with diabetes.  While neither of the teams won prize money, the opportunity to advocate for the profession and network with a diverse group of people with common concerns was rewarding.
